 - Role-play presenting a product pitch with confidence and clarity
 - Expand vocabulary related to branding, marketing, and storytelling

Materials Needed

-
Video clips of 2/3 tv commercials that I shot when I used to be a Director
- Images of adverts I created when I used to be an Art Director (print ads, billboards, etc.)
- Slides or handouts with marketing vocabulary
- Timer or stopwatch (for roleplay/pitch challenge)

Lesson Plan Breakdown

1. Warm-Up: Creative Icebreaker (10 mins)

Activity:
Ask the student:
“What’s your all-time favourite commercial?”
“What made it memorable - the story, music, humour, or message?”

Then:
Play one of my commercials (eg. Eukanuba Dogs)
Ask follow-up questions:
 - What emotion does this evoke?
 - How does the visual style help the message?
 - Would this ad work in another country/culture?

2. Vocabulary Boost: Branding & Persuasion (5 mins)

Introduce key terms:
 - Target audience
 - Brand identity
 - Hook / slogan / tagline
 - Emotional appeal

3. Activity: Ad Critique & Analysis (15 mins)

Play another short commercial (or show one of my print ads).
Ask the student to analyze it:
 - Who is the target audience?
 - What’s the message?
 - Is it effective? Why or why not?
 - What elements stood out: tone, pacing, visuals, script?

4. Main Speaking Task: Creative Pitch Challenge (20 mins)

“You’re the creative director for a brand-new product. Pitch it to me like we’re in an ad agency meeting!”

I’ll give 2/3 product options, such as
 - a new eco-friendly water bottle
 - smart sunglasses with voice control
 - time-saving kitchen gadget

Steps:

  1. Give 5–10 mins to plan (they can ask me for feedback/advice).
  2. Student gives a 2–3 minute pitch (I’m the client!).
  3. Give warm feedback. And have fun discussing!

5. Wrap-Up & Feedback (5 mins)

  • Reflect: What was challenging? What came naturally?
  • New phrases learned?
