Using comparative language to answer Writing Task 1 (Pie Chart questions0 efficiently and effectively
레슨 상세 내용
In this IELTS focussed lesson we look at pie chart based questions and examine the kind of language we need to use to answer questions efficiently.
First we will focus on how to reword the question for an introductory sentence.
We then look at how to identify key features in the pie chart when making comparisons. What is significantly larger? What is significantly smaller? What is similar in size?
We will then look at the language we can use to make comparisons using comparative and superlative forms of adjectives to form sentences that accurately describe the features given.
We will also look at the comparative structure 'x is not as + adjective + as y'.
For example using the pie chart given in the picture we could say:
'Technology was not as popular amongst boys as physical education. 18% of boys listed technology as their favourite school subject. Conversely, the number of boys who gave physical education as their favourite school subject was three times larger, at 30%'.
We will then look at ways of modifying the 'x is not as + adjective + as y' structure by using modifiers that replace 'not' to express the range of difference.
The modifiers we will look at are:
'nowhere near'
'not quite'
'not nearly'
'almost as'
Example from the pie chart given:
'English was almost as popular amongst boys as technology, with 8% listing English and 10% listing Technology as their favourite school subject.'
