By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Introduce themselves confidently.

  • Ask and answer basic personal questions.

  • Start and maintain a simple conversation.

  • Use polite greetings and conversation starters.


1. Warm-Up (5 Minutes)

Teacher asks:

  • What is your name?

  • How are you today?

  • Where are you from?

Encourage students to answer in complete sentences.

Example:
"My name is Rahul. I am from Goa. I am doing well today."


2. Greetings and Introductions (10 Minutes)

Common Greetings

Formal:

  • Good morning.

  • Good afternoon.

  • Nice to meet you.

Informal:

  • Hi!

  • Hello!

  • How are you?

Introducing Yourself

Sentence Structure:

"My name is ______."
"I am _____ years old."
"I am from ______."
"I work as a ______."
"My hobbies are ______."

Example:

"Hello. My name is Martin. I am from Britain. I am an English teacher. I enjoy travelling and meeting new people."


3. Starting a Conversation (10 Minutes)

Useful Conversation Starters

  • Where are you from?

  • What do you do?

  • What are your hobbies?

  • Have you visited Goa before?

  • What do you like to do in your free time?

Follow-Up Questions

  • Really?

  • That's interesting. Tell me more.

  • Why do you like that?

  • How often do you do it?

Teach students:
A good conversation is not only answering questions but also asking questions.


4. Pair Practice (10 Minutes)

Student A interviews Student B.

Questions:

  1. What is your name?

  2. Where are you from?

  3. What do you do?

  4. What are your hobbies?

  5. What would you like to learn in English?

Then switch roles.


5. Role Play Activity (15 Minutes)

Scenario:

"You meet a new person at a café."

Student A:

  • Greet the person.

  • Introduce yourself.

  • Ask three questions.

Student B:

  • Respond politely.

  • Ask follow-up questions.

  • Keep the conversation going for 2 minutes.

Example:

A: Hi, my name is John. Nice to meet you.

B: Nice to meet you too. My name is Sarah.

A: Where are you from?

B: I'm from India. What about you?

A: I'm from the UK.

B: What brings you to India?


6. Closing Activity (5 Minutes)

Each student introduces their partner to the class.

Example:

"This is Priya. She is from Goa. She works as a nurse and enjoys reading books."

Homework

Speak with someone in English for 3-5 minutes and ask:

  • Their name

  • Where they are from
