Humans need water to live. Our bodies are 60-70% water, and we lose this water through sweat, breath, and other means. If we cannot put that water back into our bodies, things can get bad for us very quickly.

Dehydration happens when our bodies lose water they can't replace. At the first stage of dehydration, when we lose about 2% of our water weight, we become very thirsty. At the second stage, when 4% is gone, our bodies try to protect our water by stopping things like sweating or urinating. When we don't sweat, our body temperature rises, and our hearts beat faster. At this stage, people may lose coordination, and thinking may be affected as less blood is reaching the brain.

At the third stage, when the body loses 7% of its water, real damage begins as blood stops flowing to organs that the body considers less necessary. People may suffer seizures or have heart attacks. Eventually, they die.

The cure for dehydration is simple: getting the water back into our bodies. Especially in very hot weather, dehydration can happen quickly, so it is important to never be in a position where we cannot find something to drink.
