Learn the basics of Japanese using MArugoto!

The Marugoto curriculum is a proven, activity-based Japanese Language-learning curriculum with plenty of free materials for students. In this course, we will learn Japanese vocabulary, grammar, and useful phrases that relate to everyday life in a number of situations. This curriculum is based on the Can-Do system of language learning––a list of specific language goals (called Can-Do's) is the foundation of each lesson. The Marugoto curriculum is also known for its fun, interactive approach to teaching Japanese. Check out some of the characters we will run into!

  • How it works
Students who purchase this lesson on Cafetalk will receive the opportunity to choose from a list of topics to learn from (provided below). The vocabulary, grammar, and phrases differ between each topic. Each student is encouraged to start from the top-most topic and progress through each topic to the bottom of the list.
  • An Overview of Japanese / Greetings & Farewells
  • Asking for clarification / Basic Questions
  • Introducing yourself
  • Talking about family
  • Food and Likes
  • Asking about lunch / Ordering food
  • Talking about one's home
  • Visiting one's home
  • Numbers, Time, and Waking up
  • Questions involving time
  • Talking about hobbies
  • Going to events
  • Riding a taxi
  • Using maps / Visiting temples
  • Talking about shopping
  • Buying things
  • Writing a blog post / Talking about a day off
  • Explain a recent trip
Note that you absolutely do not have to take lessons for each topic in order. Each lesson has been designed for any learner at any point in their learning career.

  • Lesson Flow
Every lesson will essentially work the same:
  1. Log in to Skype and greet one another
  2. Lesson vocabulary presentation
  3. Pronunciation corrections (if needed)
  4. Vocabluary usage and activity
  5. Topic phrases and related grammar
  6. Phrases/Grammar Activities
  7. Online video practice and activities
  8. Cultural video
  9. Summary of concepts
  10. End
  • Prerequisites / Class Info
There are no prerequisites to take this class. All written Japanese used in this curriculum has roomaji (English characters) so any learner can take this course even without knowing the Japanese writing systems. (Note, however, that the Japanese writing system is also used in parallel to the roomaji.) Any prior knowledge of Japanese is welcome and encouraged.

This course is equivalent to the A1 (Absolute beginner) level of Japanese––the N5 level of the JLPT.

This course is useful for those seeking to travel to Japan or even for those who are seeking a smooth transition into learning the language as a second learner. The Marugoto curriculum was designed with foreigners who live in Japan in mind, so it does an excellent job of teaching the most useful and up-to-date Japanese!

  • Required Materials
There are no required materials by the student––I will provide all of the course content for you. You are, however, highly encouraged to have a notebook and pen ready to take some notes! (If the student would like a physical copy of the textbook upon which the lessons are based, I am willing to help the student purchase the text online.) If the student also requests homework, I am able and willing to assign at-home assignments as well.
