Detalles de la lección

Come and join me for this Book Club Lesson Pack! Let’s learn about the world of Middle Earth and explore the first book in the series.

The Hobbit is the first novel which JRR Tolkien published which is set in Middle Earth. In these classes we will look at the history and context of the novel, the plot (story), the symbols and language used in the book and how they are important for English-speaking culture. In every class, I invite you to share your ideas and opinions.

Class 1 – Introduction

In this class, we learn about the author, JRR Tolkein. We will explore his influences, his experiences during the First World War and his studies. How is linguistics or Anglo-Saxon history related to the story of the Hobbit? We take a look here.

We also look at a quick overview of the book, ‘The Hobbit’.

Class 2 – The Story

In this class, we look at some elements of the plot of the book. We will read the beginning part together, where we are introduced to the hobbit, whose name is Bilbo Baggins.

We also look at the idea of the ‘Hero’s Journey’ and how Bilbo can be seen to be following a mythic pattern.

Class 3 – Symbols and scenery in the book

In this class, we explore some of the themes of the book and the symbols and their interpretations. We try to answer these questions:

– What are the different places in the book – The Shire, the Misty Mountains, Beorn’s house, Mirkwood, the Halls of the Elven King, the Long Lake, the Lonely Mountain – and what kind of symbolism is associated with each place?

- What is magic and how is it symbolised in the story?

- What is the symbolism of the dragon? What does he represent?

- What is the significance of the ring, and of Gollum’s relationship to it?

Class 4 – Language in the book

In this class, we look at the way in which the author, Tolkien, uses the English language to create a particular atmosphere and mood in the story. We explore some key parts of the text and learn how to recognise some linguistic techniques.

We will also do a recap of all previous classes and you can share any questions you have!

I hope you enjoy reading and exploring this book as much as I do!
