About me:
I have been teaching high school French in the United States for 14 years and have taught ESL (English as a Second Language) for more than 25 years. I was extremely lucky to have been a JET (Japan Exchange Teacher) in Ichihara, Chiba for 1 year teaching English in middle and elementary schools. I also taught English for several years in a children's English school, Yokosuka International Association community center classes, Yokosuka Board of Education middle and elementary schools, and taught privately to Japanese children and adults for the 8 years I lived in Japan.
My teaching philosophy:
I am so happy to be able to help you study English or French. I absolutely love learning about different cultures and different languages myself, but I understand that it takes a lot of practice, hard work, and dedication. Through my experiences studying Japanese, French, Italian, German, Chinese, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, I can really relate to the frustrations one sometimes feels in learning a language. However, I truly believe that if you have the passion to learn, are willing to accept mistakes as learning experiences, and really have a desire to do your best, you will be very successful in anything you do!
Whether you are interested in vocabulary building type free conversation, learning how to use various idioms and slang, practicing through situational roleplay, having guided discussions on various relatable topics that interest you, or a more grammar-based type of lesson, I'm sure that I can accomodate your needs. I can easily adapt any lesson to your goals. My most important aim is to help you understand how you learn best, have a lot of fun doing it, and feeling at ease and comfortable communicating in French or English.
My hobbies/interests:
As stated above, I'm extremely enthusiastic about not only learning various languages but also the culture that those languages are enveloped in as well. Having lived in Italy, France, and Japan has truly helped shape who I am today.
I studied Koto for 7 years in Japan with an absolutely amazing teacher and for several years when I came back to the United States. I even performed with my teacher and other students at a local Cherry Blossom Festival.
When I told my students that I really liked Enka, just before I left for the United States, they took me to Ishikawa Sayuri's concert in Tokyo. That was truly a memorable event that I will treasure forever.
Having the experience of wearing a beautiful kimono in Japan while teaching an entire elementary school full of wonderful curious children can never be erased from my mind... I will cherish that memory forever.
