Miyu. M Tutor Profile

Nice to meet you; I’m Miyu. I work as a Japanese language instructor at a business Japanese school in Tokyo, teaching Japanese online to foreign business professionals stationed in Japan. Since many of my students are absolute beginners, I conduct lessons using an indirect method that incorporates English. As students become more accustomed to the language, we gradually shift toward using more Japanese.

Do you find Japanese difficult? As you may know, Japanese people struggle greatly to master English. Why is that? It is because the structures of Japanese and English (an Indo-European language) are vastly different. Furthermore, our perspectives on things and the ways we conceptualize expression often differ. Therefore, if you are struggling to master Japanese, it is only natural.

I have experienced this myself: when speaking English with a "Japanese mindset," the English comes out sounding strange. In other words, directly translating the Japanese that pops into our head into English often results in unnatural phrasing. Take the phrase "to take a shower," for example; in Japanese, we say *shawā o abiru*, which literally means "to pour a shower over oneself." This is just one example, but direct translation from Japanese to English often leads to unnatural results. Also, Japanese does not have prepositions, which is why Japanese people often struggle with them. We are constantly grappling with the differences between the two languages.

I imagine many Japanese language learners also struggle with these differences. However, discovering these distinctions can be a fun experience. It brings me great joy to see the look of excitement on my students' faces—like the look of someone making a discovery—when they realize these differences. Expressing things through Japanese might make the same concepts appear in a slightly different light.

In my lessons, I aim to help you master more natural Japanese while remaining keenly aware of the differences between the language and English. And, of course, I make sure to keep things fun and humorous! Before becoming a Japanese language instructor, I worked at the Tokyo branch of a foreign bank as well as a domestic bank; I hope to share insights into the customs, etiquette, and culture of the Japanese business world.
