Hello! My name is Kristen and I am a wife and mom to 2 handsome boys whom I homeschool. As an avid reader and life-long learner it has long been my passion to help others learn and succeed in their goals. After tutoring for 2 years at my local community college, I found that teaching is such a wonderful way that I get to share my passion for learning. I have also studied Japanese and Chinese for several years and love studying and teaching languages. I would love to help people learn how to communicate clearly and confidently in English so they can succeed in their school, in their work, and in their travels.
Teaching Style
My teaching style focuses on first understanding where the student is at in their education and what their goals are. From that, I help them break down complex topics into simple, fundamental building blocks that they can use and apply to everyday language. I enjoy using analogies and real-life application so the student will have practical steps to use English in their day-to-day life.
My speciality is in teaching students in Middle School and High School or adults who are wanting to improve their English for work. My lessons are based on topic and center around teaching that topic and creating application exercises for the students.
An example of this is teaching the application of direct objects and how certain verbs require a direct object, while others do not. I would walk the student through example sentences then give them application sentences to try to create a full sentence using a direct object from a pool of words. Finally, we will work through any questions the student may have to give them a better understanding of the topic.
I also offer casual English conversation!
If you have a topic, such as cooking, work, or travel, and want to know how to speak about it more fluently, bring your questions and we will chat about your favorite topic.
Teaching Background
I was homeschooled through 1st to 12th grade. This often gave me the opportunity to tutor my friends who went to public school. After that I went to my local community college. There I was often found tutoring my friends in Mathematics until I was offered a position as a Math Tutor. I was blessed to work there for 2 years before taking some time off to have my 2 sons. Recently, I graduated with a Bachelors of Health Sciences from Liberty University. With that degree and while pursuing my TEFL certificate, it would be my honor to teach you English.
Learning a new language can seem intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. In my lessons you can ask any question in regards to English, no matter how small. My goal is to help you speak, read, and write English with confidence. Schedule a lesson with me and let's get to work!
Personal Rules
- Video recording: I prefer my students to not record the lesson. I do allow for time in the lesson where I help them to take notes for review.
- Camera rules: I prefer my students to have their cameras on during the lesson as it helps with speaking and understanding. I do accept audio only when necessary.
- Disruptions: Are you a busy mom wanting to understand English better? Do you have young children and its hard to get a quiet moment? I completely understand! I try to keep my lessons as undisturbed as possible, but sometimes my son may have a quick question I need to answer. If you are a mom wanting to learn English, feel free to have your children around during the lesson.
- Short-term cancellations: as a mom of 2 boys, sometimes life happens. It is my goal to never have a short-term cancellation, if something does arise, I will send a message notifying you of the cancellation or of a late start.
- Age restrictions: I welcome students of all ages!
- Recommended lesson order: If you have a certain lesson that you would like students to book first, please mention it in your self introduction. We also recommend moving the lesson to the top of your lesson list.
