Hello there! Thank you for stopping by to read my profile. I’m Tim, a British guy who’s made his home in Taiwan. I’m not a traditional English teacher. My academic background is in the ecological sciences and I’ve been working in business my adult life, mostly in sustainability consulting, which I still do. But, I have been tutoring English on and off for more than ten years and in 2021 I obtained a level 5 TEFL Certificate from the TEFL Academy to help me become a better tutor. I’ve made a big decision for 2025, which is to spend more of my time helping people. So, I’m brushing off my TEFL certificate and, thanks to the kind folk here at Cafetalk, I’m here to offer my services.
About my teaching style
My teaching style is relaxed, informal and flexible. I’ve used text books to tutor English in the past because some students like the structure they provide. But I’m not a huge fan of them for one-on-one sessions. Instead, I prefer to focus on the specific needs of each student and create lessons tailored to address them. Most importantly, I try to make sure each session is fun and engaging because we learn better when we’re in a positive frame of mind.
My philosophy is to help you develop a solid foundation in the universal elements of the language so that you get more and more comfortable using English on a regular basis, which is the best way to learn it. The important thing is that you enjoy learning and using English, and that other people understand you when you do.
I don’t have any experience teaching young children so I’m only offering lessons to students 18yrs or older.
All lessons will be in English to give you the benefit of immersion (and because I can’t conduct lessons in any other language!), but we will go at a pace you’re comfortable with. I can conduct lessons using either Skype or Zoom and we can have cameras on or off, depending on your preference.
The kinds of lessons I offer:
A bit about me
I’ve been living in Asia since 2001, but Taiwan has been my home since 2011. I live here with my Taiwanese wife and our Taiwanese dog (Maia) who we adopted from a rescue shelter. I’m a vegan who enjoys cooking, camping, photography, woodworking, reading, listening to music, doing crosswords, and playing tabletop roleplaying games. I used to enjoy hiking in Taiwan's beautiful mountains, but I haven't done that for a few years now.
I also like to unwind watching sports on TV with my wife and a glass of wine or two. I’m a lifelong Tottenham Hotspur fan (which keeps me humble) and in the last couple of years we have become big baseball fans, largely because of the amazing Shohei Ohtani.
