Hello there! My name is Caitlin and I am a native English speaker from the United States. I’m a passionate learner and educator with a Masters degree in the Humanities from the University of Chicago. While there, I studied Japanese and Art History. I have spent significant time studying foreign languages (including Italian, Latin and Portuguese) and believe it’s an important skill for everyone to develop.
My love of learning languages brought me to work in Italy and then to school in Japan on separate occasions. I honed my language skills surrounded by native speakers and have come to firmly believe they are the best teachers for students wishing to master any language.
My time in Italy was especially foundational. I worked at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice (a beautiful city to live in), where I interacted with international visitors on a daily basis, and when my job finished I explored the country meeting many fellow travelers along the way. Having a language in common was beneficial to me for my work, but also for travel and as a way to connect with new people and learn their stories.
My love of languages continued to grow as I started learning more languages, and I decided to get certified to teach English as a second language to help others gain confidence in speaking a foreign language. I hope to provide my students with the skills necessary for similar, life-changing experiences later in their lives through their knowledge of English. Whether you are interested in English for your child, for business purposes, for travel, or for fun, I hope to help you achieve your goals.
As a life-long learner I love to take what I have learned as a student and bring that into my teaching style. Understanding that everyone learns a bit differently, I think it is important to remain flexible and student-focused, targeting lessons to individual needs. Every student is different and I am excited to take the time to get to know you or your child and how I can best be of service. Just remember, the best way to learn a language is to be exposed to it, and use it, as much as possible.
If you would like to know a bit more about me on a personal level, when I am not teaching English I spend much of my spare time reading (my favorite book is Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen), hiking, and learning to cook new meals from around the world! Even if we are not a good fit for each other, I hope you find the best teacher for you or your child!
