Hi, I'm Lavonne,  most people just call me Riley.

I have been living and teaching in Japan for more than a decade, and I can still find something interesting and surprising. I am based in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, about an hour from Tokyo, where I currently teach at two colleges.

My background is pretty varied. I have taught Medical English to nurses and doctors, coached a high school debate team to a regional championship, developed writing programs for students aiming at competitive Japanese universities, and spent four years visiting elementary schools to teach phonics to six-year-olds.

The common thread in all of it is that I care whether the English actually works, not just in the lesson, but when it counts for real. My teaching style is direct and focused. I will tell you honestly what is working and what is not, point out the patterns that are holding you back, and push you toward precision. I am patient, but I take your goals seriously, and I expect you to as well. Students who want a challenge tend to enjoy our lessons. Students who want only encouragement may find me a bit much.

Outside the classroom I practice Kyokushin karate, play jazz and gospel on the guitar, read more than is probably healthy, and spend time on Python and Linux when I should be sleeping. I also write,mostly fiction, which has nothing to do with English teaching but probably explains why I care so much about how sentences work.
