Let's review the grammar for instead or "stattdessen".
"Ich habe Medizin genommen, aber stattdessen ging es mir schlechter."
In Japanese we would express this using 却って:
薬を飲んだけど、却って気分が悪くなった。
Corresponds to the English using instead:
I took medicine, but I ended up feeling worse instead.

A variation in English would be the usage of "on the contrary".
In German we have other options like using "im Gegenteil" oder "entgegen den Erwartungen".
