
Strategies to achieve success in the IELTS exam when dealing with Comparative Bar Chart questions

In this lesson we take an indepth look into how to approach Writing Task 2 of the IELTS exam when given a bar chart that compares two sets of data and is not trend related.
We will look at rewording the question to form an introduction to the topic of the graph.
Strategies for identifying key features of the graph; looking at:
* What are the key features
* What is different
* What is the same
We will then look at the kind of vocabulary needed to describe this kind of graph.
Vocabulary:
Comparative and superlative forms of adjectives.
For example with reference to the graph in the image, we may use the adjective 'popular' to describe features in the graph.
Adjective: 'popular' Superlative form: The most/least popular
Comparative form: more/less popular
To form sentences that describe a feature
'In both bakeries, doughnuts were the most popular products, with both shops selling between 120 and 140 items in 2010.'
And we wiill look at the language that can be used to approximate figures. Such as

Well under
Roughly
Approximately
Circa.
