The Big Five of South Africa


1. Warm-Up 🎉

Game: Guess the Animal
Teacher will draw or mimic an animal movement or sound, student should guess the animal.
 

2. Presentation 📖

Introduce the Big Five with pictures/flashcards( in the lesson itself there will be a lot of pictures)

1. 🦁 Lion – The King! (roar sound)


2. 🐘 Elephant – Big ears, long trunk (pretend to be an elephant)


3. 🐃 Buffalo – Strong horns


4. 🐆 Leopard – Fast and quiet (hide like a cat)


5. 🦏 Rhinoceros – Big horn!



Teach key words: big, strong, fast, quiet, dangerous.

Example: “The lion is strong.” (Children repeat.)
 

3. Practice Activity (8 minutes) 🎲

Activity 1 – Matching Game:

Show flashcards of animals and words.

Children match animal → name → word (lion → lion → strong).


Activity 2 – “Which Animal Am I?”

Teacher says: “I am big. I have a trunk. Who am I?”

Children answer: “Elephant!”

Let kids take turns.
 

4. Speaking/Creative Activity🎨

Drawing or Role-play:

Option A: Children draw their favorite Big Five animal and write one word (Lion – strong).

Option B: Small role-play – children act out the animals while others guess.
 

5. Wrap-Up (3 minutes) 🌟

Quick review: Show flashcards, kids shout the names.

Ask: “Which Big Five animal do you like the most?”

End with a cheer: “Big Five are strong and amazing!”
 

✅ By the end of the lesson, children will be able to:

Recognize and name the Big Five animals

Use simple words to describe them

Express their favorite animal in English
