It's great oppotunity for you and your kids to immerse Japanese culture and life, Japanese kindrgartens and public primary schools include so many activities!!
The schools have got subsidy by local govenment and Japanese gavernment, it wil cost you the minimum, if you are registared as resident there.
I can tell you about the Japanese education. What I know is the recent education in Tokyo. If you live in rural area or you have specific school in your mind, please let me know in advance. I'll reserch it first and let you know how it's like.

Japanese kindergartens or schools usually start to accept applications from the midle of October to the beginning of November, you'd better start preparing in summer time. They'd have open shool days by fall. It's easier to choose the right school if you really can feel the atmosphere there.
