Lesson Objectives

By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand and explain what gender roles are.

  2. Use related vocabulary in sentences and discussion.

  3. Express opinions and discuss gender roles in society.

  4. Compare traditional vs modern perspectives on gender roles.


Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard / notebook / online text editor

  • Vocabulary list (see below)

  • Short article or example scenarios about gender roles (optional: video or images)


Lesson Outline

1️⃣ Warm-up / Introduction (5–10 min)

  • Greet student and ask:

    • “What comes to mind when you hear the term ‘gender roles’?”

    • “Can you give examples of jobs or tasks usually linked to men or women?”

  • Encourage free answers; note keywords.


2️⃣ Vocabulary Introduction (10 min)

Introduce key words and phrases related to gender roles:

Activity: Ask student to create a sentence using each word.


3️⃣ Reading / Listening (Optional – 5–10 min)

  • Share a short article, paragraph, or video clip about gender roles in different cultures.

  • Ask comprehension questions:

    • “What examples of gender roles did you notice?”

    • “Do you agree or disagree with the way these roles are assigned?”


4️⃣ Discussion / Speaking Practice (15–20 min)

Discussion Questions:

  1. “What are some traditional gender roles in your country?”

  2. “Do you think gender roles are changing today? How?”

  3. “Have you ever felt limited by a gender stereotype?”

  4. “Should schools teach boys and girls differently? Why or why not?”

Activity:

  • Role-play: Student acts as a parent, teacher, or employer and you discuss a gender-related scenario.

  • Encourage full sentences, opinions, and supporting reasons.


5️⃣ Writing / Speaking Wrap-up (5–10 min)

  • Ask student to summarize their opinion on gender roles in 3–5 sentences.

  • Optional: Student can write a short paragraph for homework about how gender roles influence career or household tasks.


6️⃣ Homework / Extension (Optional)

  • Find an article, video, or news story about gender roles and prepare a short summary.

  • Prepare a list of 5 gender stereotypes and suggest alternatives.
