Detalles de la lección

Take 15 minutes a day to challenge yourself with a game in English!

How do these games improve my English?

In a relaxed atmosphere, you will practice simple and repetitive language because of the nature of the activity. Because of the repetitive nature of the language and the limited context for conversation, you will gain confidence quickly. In addition, the tight focus means we can insist on perfect grammar and pronunciation. The repetition allows these grammatical structures and pronunciations to become internalised, hard-wired, muscle-memory.

The third person singular verbs are often the most difficult for non-native speakers to get perfect. Even academics who have been studying English regularly since they were five years old sometimes continue to use the wrong form of the verb with third person singular nouns / pronouns. It's difficult to find a way to get enough practice with these structures when you don't live in a 100% English-speaking environment. Games like this are a good way to get focused practice on this problem area in a natural context (rather than repetition / recitation on your own or in set dialogues).

This is a fun and relaxed way to spend time thinking in English, practicing vocabulary, and pronunciation / natural-sounding English.

Each game offers slightly different opportunities for practice or improvement. Here are some more details of the games we can play:

Guess Who?
In this game, we look at 24 cartoon people and try to guess which one the other person is thinking of. The guesser asks yes-or-no questions about the appearance of the person. We take turns thinking of a person and asking questions to try to guess the person.

Guess Who sample language:

  • Is it a man?
  • Does s/he have red hair?
  • Is he bald?
  • Does he wear glasses?
  • Does he have brown eyes?
  • Does he have facial hair / a moustache / a beard?
  • Yes, he does (Yes, he is). He has a beard (He wears glasses; He is bald). / No, he doesn't / isn't. He doesn't have a beard (He doesn't wear glasses; He isn't bald.) / (etc.)
Spot the difference
In this familiar game, we'll look at two pictures and talk about the differences between them. Again, this game offers a lot of opportunities to practice using third person singular verb forms in addition to a lot of mundane vocabulary that you might not have a chance to practice. The structures you use can be as simple or complex as you feel comfortable with, and we can focus on making sure each sentence you say is grammatically perfect and / or natural English, and we can also work on pronunciation and connected speech.

  • He has one balloon here, but two balloons here.
  • In the picture on the left, the boy is holding a blue balloon, but in the picture on the right he's holding two balloons - a blue one and a red one.
  • This hat is bigger.
  • They're both wearing a hat, but the hat on the left is bigger than the one on the right.

Who is this lesson good for?

This is good for upper-beginner to advanced students. I don't speak Japanese (or other languages) well enough to be able to explain or help using any language other than English, I apologise. However, if you understand how the game is played and you are prepared to use some of the vocabulary and sentence structures listed here, I think you will enjoy and benefit from these games. Please feel free to send me a message and ask questions if you're unsure! We can prepare ahead of time so you feel comfortable during the lesson.

Please join me for 15 minutes a day of fun brain exercises that will help your confidence, fluency, grammar, and pronunciation a lot!
