Student-Centered Introductory Lesson

Duration: 20 minutes
Objective: Maximize student speaking time while assessing their level through natural conversation Target STT/TTT Ratio: 70/30

Lesson Flow

1. Quick Welcome (1 minute)

  • Brief teacher introduction
  • Single sentence about lesson format

2. Student-Led Introduction (6 minutes)

Prompting Questions:

  • "Tell me about yourself"
  • "What brings you to English lessons?"
  • "What do you like to do in your free time?"

Teacher Note: Use follow-up questions based on student's responses to encourage deeper elaboration

3. Interest Exploration (8 minutes)

Let student guide conversation direction based on their interests mentioned during introduction. Use minimal prompts:

  • "Could you tell me more about that?"
  • "What interests you about that?"
  • "How long have you been doing that?"
  • "What's your favorite part of that?"

Teacher Note: Listen actively and note vocabulary/grammar points for potential future lessons

4. Learning Goals Discussion (4 minutes)

Student-centered questions:

  • "What would you like to achieve with English?"
  • "When do you use English now?"
  • "What situations do you want to feel more confident in?"

5. Brief Wrap-up (1 minute)

  • Quick summary of possible next steps
  • Simple explanation of lesson options
Teacher Guidelines
  • Use silence strategically - give students time to expand answers
  • Avoid repeating or rephrasing student's responses unless necessary
  • Use gesture/facial expressions to encourage elaboration
  • Note down points for feedback without interrupting student flow
  • Only interrupt for critical communication breakdowns
