This lesson focuses on helping learners transform ideas commonly expressed in Japanese into a variety of natural and flexible English expressions. Students will explore how one thought can be communicated in multiple ways depending on tone, context, and nuance.

Through guided practice, comparisons, and real-life examples, learners will develop the ability to move beyond direct translation and instead express themselves more fluently and naturally in English. The lesson emphasizes paraphrasing, tone adjustment (formal vs. casual), and choosing expressions that best fit different situations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand differences between Japanese and English sentence structures and thinking patterns
  • Learn multiple ways to express a single idea in English
  • Improve flexibility in speaking and writing
  • Develop more natural, context-appropriate English communication skills

Japanese Thought:
ちょっと難しいと思います。

Direct Translation (unnatural):
“I think it is a little difficult.” 

So, how do we say it more naturally? Here are 2 ways: 
Polite / Soft: “It could be a little challenging.”

Casual:  “Hmm, that might be kind of tough.”
