HELLO EVERYONE!

My name is Sarah, and I was born and grew up in the US in the State of Delaware on the East Coast.  Delaware is conveniently located between New York City and Washington D.C. and is famous for its tax-free shopping and beautiful beaches.

This is the sunny neighborhood where I live. There is so much space and so many trees!

I love Delaware because it is small enough that we all feel we are connected, and there is a wonderful community feeling. I lived for 17 years in Germany and returned again to the US in 2018 to be with my family in Delaware. My hobbies include learning languages, cooking and baking, and reading stories with my friends’ grandchildren.

I also like to make birthday cakes and cookies for children. Look at my chocolate birthday cake that looks like a dragon!

When I started college, I was a shy young woman who was afraid to speak in front of others. I thought I would become a scientist and quietly work in a lab. Imagine my surprise when I was asked to teach a physics class to university students and realized that I loved speaking in front of a class and teaching! I enjoyed explaining difficult concepts and making them easy to understand. I shared the joy of my students when they learned something new. After I graduated, I accepted a position teaching English for Scientists at a German university, starting a teaching career that has lasted over 19 years.

TEACHING STYLE

I am a friendly, outgoing, and patient teacher who will make you feel comfortable!  I will customize each lesson to your specific needs, which we can talk about in the first session. To learn a language, you must use it. To speak English, you must speak. To write English, you must write.  Together, we will work on all the skills that you wish to improve. Different students have different preferred learning styles: for example, some students love to learn the details of grammar, while some prefer just to start using the language. I will respect your preferred style of learning.

Because I have a scientific background, I can teach scientists and academics how to explain equations, graphs, and complex technical processes in English. I can help you learn to make presentations in English at conferences and even make small talk about your area of research or work. If you need to write technical papers for work, I can help you to improve your writing skills. I have a lot of experience helping doctoral students and professors to write papers for international research journals. If you need to learn specific vocabulary in English for your work, I can help you learn it.

Although I specialize in Scientific and Academic English, I can also teach General English or Business English.  If you let me know what you would like to learn in English, I can design a class just for you!

In English, I am more focused on teaching upper-intermediate to advanced students, which would correspond to the B2, C1, and C2 levels in the European Framework of Languages.

In German,  I have more experience teaching students who are just beginning to learn German at the beginner and elementary levels, which correspond to the A1 or A2 levels.

COUNSELING STYLE

I have a BA in Psychology and have worked as a counseling social worker in Germany. My expertise includes Solution-Focused Counseling within the framework of Shazer and Berg. Together, we can identify problems that you wish to overcome or goals that you may have as well as resources that you have to address them.

In weekly counseling sessions, we can concretely work towards reaching your goals, step by step. This is a very practical approach that seeks to strengthen people to make positive change in their lives.

I can also help you to gain perspective about your life or your goals if you feel confused. If needed, I can help you with establishing personal boundaries to protect yourself in relationships.

I can offer counseling in English and in German. I look forward to talking with you and helping you to reach your goals!
