OVERVIEW

Weather is one of the first things anyone talks about in a new language- and for good reason. It is immediate, universal, and visible. This lesson uses weather and the four seasons to teach children how to express personal preferences and opinions in English for the first time. Students finish the lesson able to describe what they see outside and tell anyone what they like and why.

TOPICS COVERED

Weather vocabulary: sunny, rainy, windy, snowy, cloudy, stormy, foggy, hot, cold

The four seasons and their characteristics: spring, summer, autumn, winter

     Expressing likes and dislikes: I like ___, I don't like ___

Stating preferences: My favourite season is ___ because ___

Asking about weather: "What's the weather like today?"

SKILLS DEVELOPED

Vocabulary- weather types and seasonal language

Grammar- "like" + noun/verb-ing; "My favourite... is... because..."

Speaking- expressing opinions and preferences with reasons

Listening- following a teacher-led "weather report" activity

Art integration- seasonal poster making with written labels

TEACHING METHODOLOGY

This lesson integrates language learning with visual art and real-world observation. It begins by looking out of the window (or at a photo) and asking "What is the weather like today?" in English, grounding the lesson in something real and immediate. Weather symbols are introduced through a class weather chart that students help build, which gives them ownership of the vocabulary from the start.

The "TV Weather Reporter" activity is a crowd favourite: children stand at the front of the class, point to a hand-drawn weather map on the board, and deliver a weather forecast in English. This builds both language confidence and presentational courage. The seasonal poster-making activity allows children to combine creativity with structured writing: "My favourite season is summer. I like swimming. I don't like staying inside." Every sentence pattern is displayed as a visual scaffold on the board throughout the lesson so all learners can access it.

WHO IS THIS LESSON FOR?

Suited to A2 learners aged 8 to 12. Works well as part of a broader unit on daily life, the environment, or the calendar. Especially effective in classrooms with diverse nationalities where different children experience different weather, making the topic naturally rich for comparison and discussion.
