OVERVIEW
Storytelling is at the heart of human communication — and reported speech is the grammar structure that makes storytelling in English powerful. In this lesson, students move beyond "he said, she said" and discover how to retell stories, report conversations, and share news in a way that sounds natural and sophisticated. Rich narrative vocabulary is woven throughout, giving students the tools to make their English more vivid and engaging.
TOPICS COVERED
• Reported speech: tense backshifting rules
• Reporting verbs beyond "said": claimed, insisted, admitted, warned, promised, denied
• Pronoun and time-reference changes in reported speech
• Narrative vocabulary: vivid, compelling, plot twist, narrator, suspense, cliffhanger
• Retelling stories, film scenes, and news events
SKILLS DEVELOPED
• Grammar- forming correct reported speech across all major tenses
• Speaking- news reporting, storytelling, and retelling
• Listening- identifying reported speech in authentic contexts
• Writing- narrative writing using a variety of reporting verbs
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The lesson begins with a short "News Flash" exercise in which the teacher reports something that happened during a previous class, modelling reported speech naturally. Students quickly notice how the tenses change and how different reporting verbs convey different meanings- admitted suggests guilt, while insisted suggests determination.
The Film Scene Retelling activity is a particular student favourite: learners choose a scene from any film they love and retell it to the class in reported speech, making the language immediately personal and memorable. The Cliffhanger Story Game builds collaborative writing skills and brings creative energy into the grammar practice. The teacher models each new reporting verb with a memorable, funny, or dramatic example sentence to aid retention.
WHO IS THIS LESSON FOR?
Perfect for B1–B2 learners who already have a basic understanding of past tenses and want to develop more sophisticated, natural-sounding English. Ideal for students who enjoy creative tasks, film, storytelling, and discussion-based learning.
