OVERVIEW
Every child loves superheroes- and this lesson channels that energy directly into grammar. The present continuous tense is one of the first major grammar structures children need to describe the world happening around them in real time. By linking it to action, movement, and imagination, this lesson makes a potentially dry grammar point feel electric and alive.
TOPICS COVERED
• Present continuous: am/is/are + verb + -ing
• Action verbs: running, jumping, climbing, flying, swimming, hiding, fighting, catching
• Spelling rules: double consonant (running), drop the -e (dancing)
• Questions and answers: "What is she/he doing?" / "She is flying!"
• Describing pictures and scenes using continuous actions
SKILLS DEVELOPED
• Grammar- present continuous for actions happening right now
• Speaking- describing actions in real time
• Listening- responding to descriptions and following action commands
• Writing- creating descriptive sentences about a picture or scene
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
Movement is built into every part of this lesson. The Superhero Freeze game has students moving around the room until the teacher shouts "Freeze!"- at which point students describe whoever they are looking at. This turns grammar practice into a physical, laughing, fully engaged activity where every child wants to participate.
I use a communicative methodology with strong scaffolding: the teacher models every structure with a dramatic, exaggerated action before students practise it themselves. New vocabulary is introduced through mime rather than translation, the teacher runs on the spot and says "I am running!" until children connect the word to the action, not to their home language. The News Reporter activity adds a performance element that children enjoy enormously, building confidence in real-time spoken English production.
WHO IS THIS LESSON FOR?
Ideal for A2 learners aged 8 to 12 who know basic English vocabulary and are ready to start building grammatical sentences. Excellent for high-energy classrooms where children need to move and play as part of learning. Also effective as a refresher for older learners (13+) who are restarting English after a gap.
