Detalles de la lección
Animals are one of the most naturally engaging topics for children- and they provide a perfect platform for practising two essential grammar structures: "can" for abilities and "has/have" for description. This lesson turns the classroom into a wild safari as children discover facts about amazing animals while building real grammatical foundations they will use for years to come.
TOPICS COVERED
• Modal verb "can" for ability: A fish can swim. A bird can fly.
• "Has / have" for physical description: It has four legs and a tail.
• Animal vocabulary: lion, elephant, dolphin, parrot, giraffe, turtle, fox, butterfly
• Body part vocabulary: wings, claws, fur, feathers, scales, trunk, beak, tail
• Asking and answering yes/no questions: "Can it fly? Does it have wings?"
SKILLS DEVELOPED
• Grammar- can/cannot for ability; has/have for possession and description
• Speaking- asking questions and giving clues in a guessing game format
• Listening- understanding animal descriptions and identifying animals
• Creative writing- inventing a fantasy animal and describing it
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The lesson opens with a playful "mystery bag" or picture reveal- animals appear one at a time and students make quick guesses. This immediately generates curiosity and creates a need for the language before it is taught. Grammar structures are introduced in response to what students are trying to say, so the need for "can" and "has" feels organic rather than imposed.
The Animal Mystery guessing game forms the heart of the lesson. Students take turns thinking of an animal while classmates question them in English, which means every child is both a speaker and a listener throughout. The "Invent Your Own Animal" task pushes more confident students to combine structures creatively, while the teacher circulates to support and extend. This lesson works best when the classroom feels like an adventure- energetic, curious, and full of laughter.
WHO IS THIS LESSON FOR?
Best suited to A2 learners aged 7 to 11 who have some basic English vocabulary and can follow simple instructions in English. A natural follow-up to the beginner lessons on family and colours. Also effective for slightly older beginners (11–13) who respond well to game-based and kinaesthetic learning.
